The pleasure of getting organized

Some time ago, a reader of my blog asked me how to enjoy getting organized and not to be discouraged by the enormity of the task. I have racked my brain to answer the best I can.

The pleasure is in the result

To be honest, sometimes getting organized is no pushover. I would even say it often deeply bores me. For me the pleasure of organization comes mainly from the result. I don’t especially take pleasure in getting organized but I am happy when I find my glasses at the first attempt, remember my friends’ birthdays or pay my bills on time and this way avoid late payment fees. That’s what motivates me. When I feel my resolve weakening, I think of all the positive effects of organization.

Getting organized can even bring in money

Get organized progressively

In order to avoid working to exhaustion, and to fight procrastination, get organized little by little. Start with one task, for example tidying the surface of your desk. Then try dedicating 5 minutes per day to tidying your desk. It’s easier to motivate yourself to do something that takes only 5 minutes. After one or two weeks in a row, when you’re at ease with this habit, you can launch into a new task, for example sorting out the shoes that clutter up the hall etc. Once a task has become a habit, you do it automatically and it becomes as easy as brushing your teeth before going to sleep.

Choose tasks that have an impact

I haven’t taken the example of tidying the top of your desk at random. Thare are some tasks that let us see a difference right away. Having a neat desk enables to focus more easily. In the same way, when I remove everything that lies around on the kitchen table, I feel I can see more clearly, it puts me in a good mood and it motivates me to keep tidying. A few leads if you want to have a positive effect rapidly: clearing work surfaces, sorting mail, writing a shopping list, preparing the evening before what you must take the following day…

Get organized in a playful way

I stop at nothing to add fun to my organization: decorated boxes, multicoloured folders, a planner with inspiring quotes… I regularly tidy the virtual desktop of my computer, just to see the desktop picture of my holidays.
Treating yourself to small rewards is another way to get motivated. For example, I give myself 5 minutes to answer my e-mails and then in exchange I spend 5 minutes reading my favorite blogs.

After having fun making my own folders, putting my papers in order inside has seemed less tedious to me

If you have other ideas to enjoy getting organized, your comments are welcome.

Cornichons and other scarce commodities

When you live abroad, you learn to do without some foodstuffs that cannot be found in shops or that are very expensive. In Malta for example, I don’t find some products that are commun in France such as “fromage blanc” (a kind of fromage frais), “boudin” (a kind of sausage) and some raw milk cheeses. One week ago, I would have added “cornichons” to this list of scarce commodities. Cornichons are vinegar pickled cucumbers but without sugar. I have just found some cornichons in Portomaso supermarket. They were hidden among sweet pickles. I have caught the jar, have readen several times the ingredients to be sure and then I have brandished the jar as if it were a football world cup.

Still life with cornichons

In order to celebrate this find, I have made a mixed salad with plenty of cornichons.

A space invader in Saint Paul’s Bay

Space invaders are small characters taken from a vidéo game of the same name. Paris walls have been overrun for a long time by mosaic space invaders but I didn’t expect to find them one of them in Malta.

This invader is in Saint Paul’s Bay, on stairs that are shaped like a bridge pillar. It remains to be seen if he came alone or if it is the beginning of an invasion of the island.

Kate Bosworth at the Burberry Fall Winter 2012 Fashion Show

A few weeks ago, actress Kate Bosworth attended the Burberry Fall Winter 2012 Fashion Show. She could as well have paraded among the models since she was dressed the same way.

Pictures of the celebrities who attend Fashion Shows are widely distributed in particular on the Internet. Hence, some celebrities are asked by designers to wear clothes from their latest collection.

On my illustration, Kate Bosworth is wearing a grey sweater with a drawn owl and a brown below-the-knee pencil skirt with big pockets. She’s also wearing high-heel shoes that look like clark shoes.

I like the marriage of a casual sweater with an elegant skirt. However I would have gone without the black bow belt. It’s a simple look that can be easily recreated by combining a pencil skirt with a graphic sweater.

Sandals as travel slippers

drawing of my sandals-travel slippers

I devote an article to my sandals-travel slippers because I find they are so practical. Actually, these are sandals but I mainly use them as slippers so I have renamed them sandals-slippers.

When I travel, I try to lighten my luggage because it’s always too heavy for my liking.
Therefore I have had the idea to take with me my rubber sandals
because they are light and
multi-purpose: I use them as slippers inside but also as sandals to walk on the beach or at the swimming pool. I can wash them with soap and water and they dry quickly.
The only downside is that they are not ideal in a home that is not enough heated in winter. Otherwise I always bring them in my baggage.

The sandals I have drawn are crocs that have gone the distance till now. And you, do you bring your slippers on holiday?

Academy Awards 2012 : Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

This year I haven’t fallen in love with any outfit neither at the Cesars nor at the Oscars. There were beautiful gowns but I had a feeling of déjà vu. Still I have drawn the outfit of Octavia Spencer who has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help

The long white with silver glitter gown is by Tadashi Shoji. It isn’t especially original but, thanks to a work of pleats, it flatters the actress’ figure.

Maltese cold

When you see average winter temperatures in Malta, you could think that Maltese winter is especially enjoyable. It’ deceptive. Indeed, when it isn’t raining, it’s mild outside but it’s very cold inside. Because of the humidity, you literally feel frozen to the bone.

Outside it is mild

Outside it is mild…

The other problem is that Maltese homes have no central heating. To warm themselves, people get by. Some use a reverse cycle air conditioner or an electric radiator but it is expensive (especially if you pay the foreigner rate). Most people have a mobile gas heater that can roll from room to room.

… but inside I stay close to the heater

As for us, we have given up the gas heater since the day it started leaking. Later, the plug of our electric radiator melted. Thus I am currently blogging with two pullovers in the warm breeze of the reverse cycle air conditioning.

Malta roofs

In Malta, houses and buidings have flat roofs. People gain access to the roof by a stairway or a ladder.
I can already hear you thinking: “How lucky these Maltese people. They can enjoy the sun lying on a deck chair on their roof terrace.” Well, not in the least. Maltese roofs are functional. People hang out the washing on the roof. There can also be a water tank, a TV antenna or a satellite dish, a solar water heater and even sometimes solar panels there.

It’s really picturesque to go up onto the roof and to look at all that stuff on the surrounding roofs.

Michaëlle Jean, from immigrant to governor general

As well as drawing my favorite outfits, I would like to also draw people I find interesting. Then, after Wangari Maathai, I have drawn Michaëlle Jean.

Michaëlle Jean was Governor General of Canada from 2005 to 2010. It’s an important position as the Governor General is the representative of the Queen of England (who is also Canada’s Head of State) and is Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces. And it is a black immigrant woman who was entrusted with this responsibility.

Michaëlle Jean was born in Haiti in 1957. Her family flees dictatorship to to take refuge in Canada in 1968. Her father become violent and divorces her mother. Michaëlle Jean then lives frugally with her mother and her sister.

While studying, Michaëlle Jean works for a charity that helps women suffering from domestic violence. Then she pursues a career in journalism before being appointed Governor General of Canada. Since 2010, she has been UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti.
